A man who won’t lie to a woman has very little consideration for her feelings.
— Bergen Evans
According to Stephanie Ericsson, “The white lie suggests the truth can do more harm than a small, innocent obvious lie” (Cohen, 153). Informing a buddy that he looks amazing when he looks like crap can be predicated on a judgment that the buddy wants more than a truthful personal view to complement. But, in fact, it's the liar who makes the decision of what is really best for the one being lied to. It is a referendum, in the end. This is a delicate act of pomposity for somebody else to overcome. But not all conditions are clear and concise. Consider the sergeant in Vietnam, for comparative purposes, who did know one of his men was killed in combat but classified him as absent so that the man’s family would receive permanent benefits rather than the lump-sum stipend that the government offers families. His motive was admirable, yet this family kept their dreams alive for 20 years, incapable of moving on (Cohen, 159).
